Le mélilot (Melilotus officinalis L.) est une Légumineuse fourragère médicinale dont l'extrait entre dans la composition de médicaments à visée vasculotropes.
La qualité de cet extrait est définie en fonction de sa teneur en coumarine libre. C'est pourquoi, l'industrie pharmaceutique recherche de la drogue à forte teneur en ce principe actif.
Devant l'hétérogénéité du matériel importé ou produit en France, l'industrie d'extraction recherchait du mélilot de qualité homogène et définie.

L'objectif est de définir "des pratiques culturales" permettant au producteur de maîtriser la production de matière sèche de mélilot contenant un minimum de 0,7% de coumarine libre.
Certains facteurs génétiques et agronomiques permettant d'influer sur la teneur en coumarines du mélilot ont été mis en évidence. Les données expérimentales ont été transposées à l'échelle industrielle permettent de produire du mélilot à plus de 0,9% de coumarine libre.
